Sacraments Watch the VideoIn Latin the word ‘sacramentum’ (our sacrament) translates as “a sign of the sacred” and refers to the seven ceremonies that are significant to Christians. These sacraments are very special occasions whereby the participants come closer to God’s presence. As you learn more about the meaning of the sacraments you will be able to embrace them and celebrate them more completely. You may also wish to watch the short video clips found here in the website on each of the seven Catholic sacraments. Baptism of Infants Watch the VideoFor Catholics, the Sacrament of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. Whether we are baptized as infants or adults, Baptism is the Church's way of celebrating and enacting the embrace of God. Parents must be registered members of St. Catherine's and attend the Baptism class prior to scheduling a baptism. The class is held the first Saturday of each month at 9:00 a.m. and is offered both in English and Spanish. At least one parent should attend and class registration is not required. Contact the Church office at 770 428-7139 for more information. Reconciliation Watch the VideoThe Catholic Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as the Sacrament of Penance, or Penance and Reconciliation) has three elements: conversion, confession and celebration. In it we find God's unconditional forgiveness, and as a result we are called to forgive others. Confessions are heard on Saturdays from 4:00 - 5:00 PM and by appointment. Call the parish office at 770 428 7139. Eucharist Watch the VideoCatholics believe the Eucharist, or Communion, is both a sacrifice and a meal. We believe in the real presence of Jesus, who died for our sins. As we receive Christ's Body and Blood, we also are nourished spiritually and brought closer to God. For more details about your child and First Holy Communion contact the Religious Education office at 770-428-7138 ext. 1402 Confirmation Watch the VideoConfirmation is a Catholic sacrament of mature Christian commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts. Like Baptism and Eucharist, it is a Sacrament of Initiation for Catholics and a Sacrament of faith in God's fidelity to us. Confirmation is held in the tenth grade. Children must be a registered parishioner and attending religious education classes in the parish. Matrimony Watch the VideoFor Catholics, the Sacrament of Marriage, or Holy Matrimony, is a public sign that one gives oneself totally to this other person. It is also a public statement about God: the loving union of husband and wife speaks of family values and also God's values. Couples contemplating marriage should contact a priest or deacon at least six months before their desired wedding date to begin a period of formation for this sacrament of Christ's love for His Church. Holy Orders Watch the VideoIn the Sacrament of Holy Orders, or Ordination, the priest being ordained vows to lead other Catholics by bringing them the sacraments (especially the Eucharist), by proclaiming the Gospel, and by providing other means to holiness. Any man contemplating joining the priesthood or diaconate should meet with the Pastor. Anointment of the Sick Watch the VideoThe Catholic sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction, is a ritual of healing appropriate not only for physical but also for mental and spiritual sickness. The anointing of the sick is administered to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an illness, especially near the time of death. It is performed by a priest. Please call the office. |
