Parish School of Religion

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

The mission of St. Catherine of Siena Parish School of Religion is to assist our families in fulfilling their baptismal promises and to lead them into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.  We strive to carry out this mission by providing spiritual formation, catechesis, and fellowship.

"If we want to help the child grow near to God, we should, with patience and to go always closer to the vital nucleus of things. This requires study and prayer. The child himself will be our teacher if we know how to observe him.”

Sofia Cavalletti

In it's 4th year at St. Catherine of Siena, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is based on the Montessori model and engages children. St. Catherine's program is available for children ages 4 & 5. In the "Atrium" classroom, the child’s spiritual growth is best served through tangible but indirect means.

The philosophy of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program is that even very young children have a religious life. God is present to them in their deepest being and they are capable of developing both a conscious and intimate relationship with God. We provide materials based on age-appropriate Scripture passages and liturgical signs that nurture their relationship with God. The program balances exposure to our liturgy and the richness of our communal sacramental life with reading the Bible. Our program begins with presenting the New Testament to the children because it is the foundation of our faith. The youngest learn about Jesus and the beauty and wonder of the Kingdom of God through carefully chosen Bible verses that foster a deep love for Jesus.

Each presentation has specific materials designed to draw the child into the Biblical and Liturgical themes. These materials are always available to the children during their work time so they have additional opportunity to absorb the lessons. The work of the children is their prayer and is the most important part of their time in the atrium.
