Parish School of Religion

The mission of St. Catherine of Siena Parish School of Religion is to assist our families in fulfilling their baptismal promises and to lead them into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. We strive to carry out this mission by providing spiritual formation, catechesis, and fellowship.

Overview

This year we are implementing a new family faith formation model for children in Pre K-Grade 12 called Families Forming Disciples. All families with children of any age are invited to participate, and please note that this program will serve to satisfy the requirements for the foundational preparation for reception of the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion and/or Confirmation (the Archdiocese of Atlanta requires two years of foundational preparation immediately leading up to reception of the sacraments which can be fulfilled by participation in a Parish School of Religion, Catholic school, or an accredited Catholic home school program).

In addition to the two-year foundational preparation, there will also be specific sacramental preparation immediately leading up to reception of the sacraments. First Reconciliation and First Communion specific preparation typically occurs during second grade year, and children receive the sacraments at the end of the second grade.  Confirmation specific preparation typically occurs during the ninth grade year, and children receive the sacrament at the very beginning of the tenth grade year.

An example of a typical course of preparation to receive the sacraments would be as follows:

Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion
- Children would be required to attend Parish School of Religion, a Catholic school, or an accredited Catholic home school program in the first and second grade for foundational preparation.
- Children would also participate in specific sacramental preparation in the second grade.
- Children would receive the sacraments at the end of the second grade.

Sacrament of Confirmation
- Children would be required to attend Parish School of Religion, a Catholic school, or an accredited Catholic home school program in the eighth and ninth grade for foundational preparation.
- Children would also participate in specific sacramental preparation in the ninth grade.
- Children would receive the sacrament at the very beginning of the tenth grade.

Families Forming Disciples (Pre K-Grade 12)

Families Forming Disciples is our family faith formation program for children in Pre K-Grade 12 that will involve the whole family coming together to meet three times per month on a Sunday or Wednesday evening from 6:00-6:45pm to cover a specific topic or teaching of the Church. Two of the meetings each month will be virtual small group meetings with 8-10 other families and will be led by one of our catechists, while the third meeting will be the family alone completing a particular activity or project by themselves.  For a tentative nine-month schedule and description of how the program works, click here.

This program is not meant to be an intense catechetical course and will not burden families with additional "school work." Rather, it is intended to help families encounter Christ together by gathering for prayer and conversation about the faith at least once per week, and celebrating the rich liturgical and sacramental life of the Church more fruitfully as a family. Additionally, the capability of implementing this model virtually allows us to provide faith formation this year as safely as possible during the pandemic.

First Reconciliation and First Communion Specific Preparation

In addition to the Families Forming Disciples program, there will also be specific sacramental preparation in the second grade for those children who are receiving the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion this year.  This year, our specific sacramental preparation will consist of virtual workshops with the parents and children during the year (more information is available on our First Reconciliation & First Communion webpage).

As a reminder, children must have completed the two-year foundational religious education requirement in the first and second grade as well as the specific sacramental preparation in order to receive First Reconciliation and First Communion at the end of the second grade. For those children in the second grade or older who did not participate in a religious education program last year, please contact Joan Hennes joanh@stcatherinercc.org before registering

Confirmation Specific Preparation

In addition to the Families Forming Disciples program, there will also be specific sacramental preparation in the ninth grade for those children who are receiving the sacrament of Confirmation at the beginning of the tenth grade. This year, our specific sacramental preparation will consists of the Decision Point Confirmation program published by Dynamic Catholic, which is an app and workbook-based program completed on your own (more information is available on our Confirmation webpage).

As a reminder children must have completed the two-year foundational religious education requirement in the eighth and ninth grade as well as the specific sacramental preparation in order to receive Confirmation at the beginning of the tenth grade.  Please note that those ninth grade children who are participating in our Families Forming Disciples program or are attending a Catholic high school or accredited Catholic home school this year are only required to complete a portion of the Decision Point program, while all others will complete the entire Decision Point program to satisfy both the second year of foundational and the specific preparation requirements. For those children in the ninth grade or older who did not participate in a religious education program last year, please contact Lisa Fiamingo at lisaf@stcatherinercc.org before registering.

General Registration Information
Parents should register each of their children from Pre K-Grade 12 who will be participating in the Families Forming Disciples program and/or specific sacramental preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion or Confirmation. Those participating in our Families Forming Disciples should make sure to select their preferred family small group virtual meeting time (Sunday or Wednesday evenings) that will allow the whole family to come together.

Registration and Sacramental Fees
Because many of our materials for our programs this year are digital, we are able to reduce our fees significantly this year.  Both our general registration fees and sacramental fees will be approximately half of what they were in previous years. The current fee structure is as follows:

Families Forming Disciples
- $50 per child with $150 family cap (early registration discount through August 15 - $45 per child with $135 family cap)

Sacramental Preparation Fees
- First Reconciliation and First Communion - $50 per child in the second grade receiving the sacraments at the end of this year.

- Confirmation - $50 per child in the ninth grade receiving the sacrament at the beginning of next year in the tenth grade.

This year, there is an option to pay fees via credit or debit card either one-time upfront at a 5% discount, or you may make ten payments monthly. If you are unable to pay by credit or debit card, please do not complete this form. You will need to contact Elena Aquino
elenaa@stcatherinercc.org in the PSR office to make arrangements to pay by cash or check.
