Parish School of Religion

The mission of St. Catherine of Siena Parish School of Religion is to assist our families in fulfilling their baptismal promises and to lead them into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. We strive to carry out this mission by providing spiritual formation, catechesis, and fellowship.

Dear St. Catherine's Families,

This year we are implementing a family faith formation model for children Pre K-Grade 8 called Families Forming Disciples as well as a separate High School Confirmation Preparation program. Participation in these programs will fulfill the general and specific requirements for reception of First Reconciliation and First Communion or Confirmation.

Families Forming Disciples (Pre K-Grade 8)

Families Forming Disciples is our faith formation program for children in Pre K-Grade 8 that will involve the whole family coming together to meet three times per month on a Sunday or Wednesday evening from 6:00-6:45pm to cover a specific topic or teaching of the Church. Two of the meetings each month will be virtual small group meetings with 8-10 other families and will be led by one of our catechists, while the third meeting will be the family alone completing a particular activity or project by themselves.

This program is not meant to be an intense catechetical course and will not burden families with additional "school work." Rather, it is intended to help families encounter Christ together by gathering for prayer and conversation about the faith at least once per week, and celebrating the rich liturgical and sacramental life of the Church more fruitfully as a family. Additionally, the capability of implementing this model virtually allows us to provide faith formation this year as safely as possible during the pandemic.  If, for some reason, you are unable to participate in our Families Forming Disciples program, please contact us, and we will try to make other arrangements.  Please note, we do have resources available for children with special needs.

We will be meeting in a 3 week cycle each month beginning in September, 2020 as follows:

Week 1:  Zoom meeting with family small groups and catechist for lesson.

Week 2:  Families meet on their own to work on activity or project at home.

Week 3:  Zoom meeting with family small groups and catechist to share project.

Week 4:  Optional Zoom meeting for parents only with Fr. Neil and Dr. Paul Thigpen.

First Reconciliation and First Communion Specific Preparation

In addition to the Families Forming Disciples program, there will be additional specific sacramental preparation for those children who are receiving the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion this year (more information will be given once the year begins). Generally, these sacraments are received in the second grade. In order to receive these sacraments in the second grade, however, at least one year of religious education must have been completed immediately prior to the sacramental year through participation in our Parish School of Religion, attendance at a Catholic grade school, or completion of a Catholic homeschool program (i.e. children must have participated in religious education in the first and second grade in order to receive First Reconciliation and First Communion at the end of the second grade). For those children in the second grade or older who did not participate in a religious education program last year, please contact Joan Hennes joanh@stcatherinercc.org before completing this registration form.

High School Confirmation Preparation

For those high school students preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation, the Families Forming Disciples program is encouraged, but is not required. There will, however, be specific sacramental preparation for those children who are receiving the sacraments of Confirmation this year (consisting of self-study and some remote learning – more information will be given once the year begins). Generally, the sacrament of Confirmation is received at the end of the ninth grade. In order to receive Confirmation in the ninth grade, however, at least one year of religious education must have been completed immediately prior to the sacramental year through participation in our Parish School of Religion, attendance at a Catholic grade school, or completion of a Catholic homeschool program (i.e. children must have participated in religious education in the eighth and ninth grade in order to receive Confirmation at the end of the ninth grade). For those children in the ninth grade or older who did not participate in a religious education program last year, please contact Lisa Fiamingo lisaf@stcatherinercc.org before completing this registration form.

We are all praying for an extraordinary encounter with our Lord as we grow in our  faith with each other. Please reach out to us with any questions by phone or email.

In Christ,
