Elijah Cup

Each week, individuals or families have the opportunity to bring a blessed chalice (Elijah Cup) into their homes, providing a focal point to encourage prayer for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, the permanent diaconate and to the religious life. It is a powerful presence and inspires prayer from adults and children alike.
In 1 Kings 17, during a drought, Elijah tells the poor widow of Zarapeth that if she makes him a small loaf of bread with the last of her flour and oil, her "jar of flour will not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, until the Lord sends rain upon the earth." In faith, the widow baked the bread and fed Elijah. For the next year, the widow, her son, and Elijah ate bread made from the bowl of flour and jug of oil. If we pray with the faith of the widow of Zarapeth who encountered the prophet Elijah, our cup will never run dry! We will always have priests to bring us Jesus in the Eucharist and religious vocations to serve the people of God.

The process is very easy. Simply sign up for a particular Mass, and sit in the first row of pews off to the side near the statue of St. Joseph. At the end of Mass, the priest will present the chalice (including resources for prayer for vocations inside the case) to you. During the week, you can place the chalice in a prominent place in your home and use it as a focal point for prayer for vocations using the included prayer resources or any other prayers you would like. The following week simply bring the chalice back to Mass with you and place it on the table inside the main doors of the church as you enter before Mass.
