New Auxiliary Bishop appointed to Atlanta

The Archdiocese of Atlanta has been appointed a new auxiliary bishop, the note below is a communication from Archbishop Gregory. Please keep Bishop-Elect Korzon, Bishop Shlesinger and Archbishop Gregory in your prayers!

"Pope Francis has once again demonstrated his great love for this local Church by assigning The Reverend Joel M. Konzen, S.M., as an Auxiliary Bishop. I am deeply grateful to His Holiness for this appointment of such an excellent priest, who is well known and highly respected by the people of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Bishop-Elect Konzen has spent nearly two decades in pastoral service to this Archdiocese, most of it in caring for and educating students at Marist School. He has been an effective and generous administrator and advisor to the educational ministry of thousands of young people and their parents at Marist, Notre Dame Academy, and most recently at Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School.

I warmly welcome Bishop-Elect Konzen as an episcopal colleague who will join Bishop Bernard E. Shlesinger and me in caring for this wonderful Catholic community. He is quite familiar with the Archdiocese of Atlanta, and I am confident he will enjoy a smooth and speedy transition to episcopal service in these sixty-nine counties of North and Central Georgia. I thank the Marist community for preparing such an excellent servant of the Lord.

We are looking forward to his Episcopal Ordination on Easter Tuesday, April 3rd. Please keep Bishop-Elect Konzen, Bishop Shlesinger and me in your prayers as we prepare for that happy day." - Archbishop Gregory
