Are Angels Our Friends?

Q. Are the Angels Our Friends?

A. Fascinating thing about the angels is that they are the mostly unseen heroes, but they do appear various time throughout the Bible and over the centuries. When they do emerge it helps us to understand more about their nature and place in the created universe. In Sacred Scripture, for instance, the angel Raphael accompanies Tobias, an angel rescues St. Peter from prison, and the apostles are aided several times by these heavenly messengers.

There are many other instances in which we can find similar stories. The Catechism (#336) lets us know that “From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by [the angels] watchful care and intercession. ‘Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.’ Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.” They are friends, indeed! So, take a moment today to say “hi” to your guardian angel and consider a fitting “thank you.”
