Q. Did we really originate from one single human pair?
A. Believe it or not, scientists are attentively studying human DNA to answer this question. Some have reached the conclusion that the human race did indeed originate from two persons somewhere in eastern Africa. This conclusion is no surprise. Basing its doctrine on Sacred Scripture, the Church teaches that the human race descended from two persons, whom we call our first parents. Scriptural evidence is found in Genesis but also reaffirmed both in the Old and New testaments. The book of Tobit, for instance, testifies “You made Adam and gave him Eve his wife as a helper and support. From them the race of mankind has sprung” (8:6); And again, in The Acts of the Apostles, “[God] hath made of one, all mankind, to dwell upon the whole face of the earth” (17:26).
