Who Is the Archangel Michael?

Q. What do we know about the Archangel Michael?

Michael (whose name in Hebrew means “Who is like God?”) is noted in four biblical passages: Daniel 10:13, 21; 12:1; Jude 9; and Revelation 12:7. Based on these texts and ancient tradition, we look to Michael as the prince of the angelic hosts fighting Satan; the angel who rescues the souls of the faithful from Satan’s power, especially at the time of death; the angelic champion of God’s people; and the angel who calls souls from earth at death to their particular judgment. In our parish, we pray after every Mass the prayer to St. Michael that was published for the Church’s use by Pope Leo XIII in 1886.
