Parish School of Religion

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

The mission of St. Catherine of Siena Parish School of Religion is to assist our families in fulfilling their baptismal promises and to lead them into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.  We strive to carry out this mission by providing spiritual formation, catechesis, and fellowship.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori based religious education program for preschool through grade 2.  It was developed in Rome by Sofia Cavaletti and Gianna Gobi in 1954 and has since expanded worldwide. The program’s approach to understand our faith through hands-on experiencing their “work” in the Atrium. The atrium is a special room that is prepared and filled with learning materials that help children begin to learn the mysteries of God that supports their natural senses of wonder. Catechists demonstrate various presentations to the children about important Bible stories and liturgy, and the child is then able to reenact and practice those presentations to discover their deeper meeting.  Whether your child is just beginning or has already begun their journey within St. Catherine’s PSR children’s ministry, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an additional option available to families.

CGS follows the PSR schedule and calendar, and uses the same sign-in and sign-out procedure. All catechist in the CGS go though a lengthy training which is necessary to prepare teachers to master the curriculum. To keep this program going, we will need more catechists and assistants trained on various levels, who are willing to teach and prepare clsss once per week.

*  Due to our Parish School of Religion meeting virtually, we will not be offering CGS the first semester of the 2020 school year. We are in the process of preparing a CGS Level 2 for Sacramental Preparation for the 2021-2022 school year.  All age children are welcome to join our new FAMILIES FORMING DISCIPLES Program with their families.  Please see the registration page on our website.
